Parting Shots Fall 2024

Updated: May 5

I have enjoyed focusing on media ethics, or the lack thereof this fall. These assignments became a passion rather than an assignment broadening my understanding and perspective, it will help me wherever I go in the future. An ethical framework for media is indispensable in today’s world, this only exists in a vacuum. We are now immersed in a world where the profit-driven nature of media prioritizes sensationalism, divisiveness, and exploitation to maximize revenue, perpetuating systemic inequalities and eroding public trust disregarding its potential as a tool for empowerment and truth, with social media and podcasts following blindly.

Once again I will draw from Enrique Dussel’s ethics of liberation, that the media should serve the community by amplifying marginalized voices, fostering critical dialogue, and advancing the dignity of all people. Dussel espoused that ethical media-making and consumption require a commitment to solidarity and justice and I agree. There are two parts to this equation as creators in all mediums should center the needs of the oppressed, critically reflect on the consequences of their narratives, and prioritize the well-being of communities over financial gain. The other side and more important are the consumers of this information who will have more trouble changing. We need to teach ethical consumption where one questions who benefits from the story being told and recognizes the harm that sensational or biased content can inflict.

Conversely, the for-profit model undermines these ideals by prioritizing engagement metrics over accuracy and social responsibility. We are up against algorithms that reward outrage and misinformation, creating echo chambers that deepen divides. We, the audience, have become more like a commodity rather than a participant in a shared cultural dialogue. I believe this is the ultimate purpose from the powers that be who want to stifle any potential to inspire collective action or critical thinking which may break their control.

What I want you, my friends, family and those brave enough to read this far to know is this: you are not just a passive recipient to be manipulated by the rich, but an active agent in the media ecosystem. Your clicks, shares, and subscriptions have power, so use them wisely and look for an ethical community based group rather than those that yell the loudest. This goes against everything you have been exposed to, it will be a challenge, but a worthwhile one. You can be a force that changes the world.
